A simple, private text compare tool
This text compare tool (also called a diff checker) shows exactly what changed between two versions of a document, an essay, a contract, lyrics or code. Additions are highlighted in green and deletions in red, right inside the text, so you can see each edit in context.
Compare by words for normal writing, by letters to catch small spelling fixes, or by lines for lists and code. Because the comparison runs in your browser, confidential documents are never uploaded.
How to compare two texts
- Paste the original text into Original.
- Paste the edited text into Changed.
- Read the Differences panel: green was added, red was removed. The summary counts the changes.
- Choose Letters or Lines for a finer or coarser comparison.
Questions
Can I compare two Word documents or PDFs?
Copy the text out of each document and paste it into the two boxes. For PDFs, PDF to Text can pull the text out for you.
Why do some unchanged lines show as different?
Extra spaces or different capitals count as changes. Tick “Ignore extra spaces” or “Ignore capitals” to skip them.
Is there a size limit?
Texts of tens of thousands of words compare in a moment. Very long texts are compared line by line first, so they stay fast.
