Clean up messy text in seconds

Text copied from a PDF, an email or a web page often arrives with double spaces, lines broken in the middle of sentences, odd quotes and invisible characters that cause trouble later. This text cleaner fixes all of that at once, and you choose exactly which fixes to apply.

Join broken lines is the one to use for PDFs: it rejoins sentences that were split across lines while keeping your paragraphs. Remove invisible characters strips zero-width spaces and non-breaking spaces that can break spreadsheets, code and search.

What each option does
  • Remove extra spaces: turns runs of spaces into one, and removes a space before commas and full stops.
  • Trim spaces at line ends: removes spaces at the start and end of every line.
  • At most one empty line in a row: keeps paragraphs apart but removes big gaps.
  • Join broken lines: rejoins sentences split across lines (common in PDFs) and words split with a hyphen.
  • Put everything on one line: removes all line breaks.
  • Straight quotes and plain dashes: swap typographic characters for simple keyboard ones.
  • Remove bullets and numbering: strips “•”, “-”, “1.” and “a)” from the start of lines.
  • Remove HTML tags: keeps only the text of pasted web code.

Your choice of options is remembered for next time.

Questions

Why does text copied from a PDF have line breaks everywhere?

PDFs store each printed line separately, so copying keeps a line break at the end of every line. Tick “Join broken lines” to rejoin them into normal paragraphs.

What are invisible characters?

Characters such as zero-width spaces and non-breaking spaces look like nothing (or like a normal space) but can stop formulas, searches and code from working. This tool removes them.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Cleaning happens entirely in your browser.
